About Our Foundation

Our Vision

The Delmarva Youth and Family Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of coordinating material resources and administrative support to bolster grassroots initiatives that assist local groups in taking charge of the development of their communities.  Many local groups are inspired to action to address long-standing patterns of injustice around them.  These initiatives often start small, then gradually grow with complexity as they persevere and experience more success.  Greater growth demands greater material and resource needs, along with greater systems and processes of administration.  The Delmarva Youth and Family Institute offers these groups a partner to help meet these new needs and implement higher levels of infrastructure so that they can continue to advance their valuable work and not be distracted by important but peripheral elements.  In short, we focus on sustaining their growth, so they can focus on empowering their community.

Our Beneficiary

The Delmarva Youth Movement (DYM) is the primary beneficiary of the Delmarva Youth and Family Institute.  Based in Eastern Shore, MD, the DYM mobilizes growing groups of youth across the peninsula to become Service Leaders.  A Service Leader is someone who inspires and motivates their fellow peers and community members to support one another in achieving higher levels of personal growth and community transformation.  Their core belief is that Youth MUST Change the World, not that they CAN change it, or eventually WILL change it, but that youth MUST change the world.  And youth must do it now.  Many of the Youth Service Leaders start by organizing group activities for children in the area to keep them safe and teach them about the spiritual powers of love, justice, kindness, and service.  Real and immediate change starts with this simple activity, and as the team of youth teachers, supporting adults, and participants grow in numbers and experience, their power for community projects increases, their influence on the wider society expands, and real and lasting change can confidently occur.  For over a year, they have successfully sustained a team of over a dozen youth teachers, between the ages of 11 to 18, who are teaching weekly classes with over 60 children in the areas of Federalsburg and Hurlock, MD.  Some of the teachers give over 15 hours per week each to the movement, and some have acquired over 150 community service hours in the last six months alone. For more information, visit www.delmarvayouth.org.
